. megan mcgrath is at the ellipse with a preview of the big ceremony. >> you can see the tree over my shoulder here. it's all decorateding the lights are on, but of course it hasn't been lit yet. they won't be doing that until shortly after 5:00 tonight. this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree, a tradition that was started in 1903. the video that you're seeing here, this was actually from last year's tree lighting. this year, though, folks can expect a few different things. we've got a couple changes here. first of all, the stage has been changed and the location of the stage has been changed as well. they basically shifted it 90 degrees. so you've got this really pretty backdrop now. you've got the tree immediately to the left of the stage and then to the left of that, you have the white house itself, which of course during the time of the big event tonight will be all lit up. so very beautiful backdrop here. also, the host this year is actor neil patrick harris. and we've got a star-studded lineup. what can we expect in terms of musical performances? take a listen. >>

. megan mccorchal has more on what happened. >> reporter: the prisoner turned on the hospital staff and the officer that was guarding him. >> reporter: police cars flood the entrance to the emergency room at university of maryland st. joseph medical center. >> a police officer and the prison got into a scuffle. >> reporter: fellow officers rushed to help that female officer. the officer was guarding a prisoner who had been take ton the e.r. for medical attention, but a hospital staffer noticed something wrong. >> at some point, one of the hospital staff people discovered that the prisoner had a needle of some sort hidden in his clothing. >> reporter: the man then grabbed a hospital staffer. that's when the officer stepped in and the prisoner tried to grab her gun. a shot was fired into the wall. >> the officer discharge pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the prisoner. >> reporter: backup officers warmed the hospital and got the suspect under control. >> reporter: during the investigation, the hospital restricted vehicle access to the e.r., blo
on the national christmas tree. >> crowds are starting to gather at the ellipse right now. megan mcgrath checked out the events leading up to tonight's big ceremony. >> reporter: one final rehearsal before the big show. among the star-studded lineup, "american idol" winner phillip phillips. also performing, the fray. singer isaac fray said he was stunned when president barack obama first approached him about coming to washington. >> i was here for an event, and the president said, let me get you up here to play a song. i said, okay. >> reporter: this is the 90th annual lighting of the national christmas tree. the tradition started by president calvin coolidge continues tonight as president barack obama and his family flip the switch. while the spirit of the evening is the same, the audience may notice some changes. first of all, the stage has been moved. >> the back drop, i mean, it is accentuated by the tree. and the white house. the executive office building. you know, really showcases many of the great monuments and features we have down here in president's park. >> reporter: and the tree its

christmas tree. this year's event included several star-studded acts. megan now with a preview of the big event. >> reporter: this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree. this started in 1923 with calvin coolidge and that tradition continuing today, with lots of things that are new this year. you see the stage brand-new. the orientation of the stage is new as well. it's got kind of an interesting perspective. you see the tree to the left of the stage, and then you also see the white house. they switched things up a little bit. we also have a new tree this year. i'm joined by scott tucker with the national park service. talk about the tree itself. because that's the highlight of this event. what happened? we have a new tree. >> we do have a new tree. back in president's day weekend of 2011, the wind storm came through d.c. and snapped the tree that was planted in 1978. we transplanted a new tree because the national christmas tree is a live, living tree. we transplanted in one in march of 2011. that one didn't make it. and so this year, roughly a month ago, october of this year,
